Am I doing something wrong?

I am on the second night of my first cycle with the DivaCup. I'm 34 and I've had two children, so it seemed it was #2 for me. :) Well, I'm having trouble getting it to pop open completely and sometimes I get an unpleasant surprise when it does pop open and it scrapes across my cervix at an inconvenient time. Also, I'm cramping, but I honestly can't tell if this is just normal cramping, cramping from the new product (I've only used pads for a very long time), or I'm just being neurotic and worrying myself to death. I still had to wear a pad today because I had some leaking. I've tried the C-fold, the punch-down fold, and attempted the origami fold, and there doesn't seem to be one that works better than another. I insert while standing, if that makes a difference.

I got the DC because I want to lessen my impact, but I'm starting to think I just need to sew myself a mess of cloth pads and call it quits. Does it get better? Any advice? I want to stick with this.

Yeah, in my experience it gets better. There's a learning curve.

When I'm wearing mine it's as though I don't even have a period. No mess, no soggy feeling of a tampon along side the vaginal walls. No smell, no bacteria buildup. No dryness and no staining of clothing. (Of course, I'm one of those rare women who doesn't ever have any cramps or anything anyway.) If you can make it work for you, it's really wonderful.

You just have to fiddle and squeeze the cup a bit to get it to pop open. Also, make sure you don't have to poop because (pardon my directness) if you have a load sitting in the back channel, it will push in on the front channel and the cup won't be able to pop open. Cause there won't be room for it to do so.

The cervix has very few nerve endings so I am thinking (I could be wrong here!) perhaps the scraping is made worse or more uncomfortable by your nervousness about the whole process?

Good luck & let us know how you're doing. :)

Okay, I had the cramping for the first maybe 3 cycles I used the cup. But I was stubborn and wanted to make it work. I don't have them anymore.

I don't wear my cup at night because somehow the cup getting full and having the fluid sit against my cervix (I guess) also made me cramp. But I was getting cramping just WEARING it at first but that went away. I would suggest giving it a little time. I'm not sure if something changed, or if my body was adjusting.

I sometimes have a little trouble getting mine to pop open. I just rotate mine until I feel it open.

The best time for me to put mine in is when I have a shower in the morning, when I can rinse everything, squat, and put it in. I think the water also helps it slide in easier.

I hope this helps. Don't give up!! Not yet!

Ok, first night of the second cycle, and things seem to be going better. Thanks for the advice! I wasn't nervous, just very aware due to the new process. I think I expected it to be like putting in a diaphragm, but that just wasn't the case so I assumed I was doing something wrong. Really, I think I need to smaller one as it still takes alot of fiddling to get it to open up a bit and it never pops completely open. (I always have to use the smallest speculum at the docs, too, so I really should have figured that in.) However, as long as there isn't a ton of leaking, I can live with it as it is. :)

I got some cloth pads, so that I can have some protection against leaks and not contribute to a landfill at the same time. So far, not bad! I love not feeling wet (comparatively), no odor, no tale-tell bulk, low environmental impact. I'm stickin' with it! :)
